About Santa Barbara Surf School
Santa Barbara Surf School has been teaching people to surf on the local point breaks and beach breaks since 2002, working out of a shop on Carpinteria Street a few blocks back from the waterfront. The school built its reputation on private and small-group coaching rather than crowded group sessions, and runs lessons year round across Santa Barbara and down the coast to Ventura.
Lessons start with beginners on soft-top longboards at protected beach breaks and go through to intermediate coaching on paddling, positioning and wave selection. Private one-on-one, two, three and four-person lessons are all available, alongside group and corporate bookings and after-school programs for local kids. On the rental side they run daily surfboard and wetsuit packages as well as multi-week rates for longer stays, plus stand up paddleboard rentals and SUP lessons for anyone who wants a calmer introduction to the water.
The long run of repeat customers comes down to the instructors. Coaches are watermen who surf these breaks daily, they pick the beach based on the morning's swell and tide rather than a fixed schedule, and beginners routinely stand up in the first session. Wetsuits, boards, and soft racks are included with lessons, so visitors who arrive with nothing but a swimsuit can still get in the water the same day.
