About Quidi Vidi Charters
Quidi Vidi Charters runs fishing trips from the small harbor in Quidi Vidi Village, a historic fishing community about five minutes from downtown St. John's. Captains Kevin Battcock and Noel Browne Jr. operate the business, which sails from mid-May to mid-October.
The main outing is a three-hour trip that heads out past Signal Hill, Cabot Tower and St. John's Harbour toward Cape Spear, with a chance to spot whales and icebergs along the way. Guests try cod jigging, a way of fishing used off Newfoundland for centuries, then learn to clean and prepare their catch back on the wharf, where fish and chips are cooked fresh. The larger boat, Smuggler's Run, is a 40-foot Hatteras that carries up to 12 people, and Smuggler's Two takes up to four.
This is a hands-on trip rather than a sightseeing cruise. Groups of four to 12 can customize the outing, local stories are part of the experience, and both vessels carry Transport Canada certified safety equipment with a briefing before every departure. For visitors who want to catch, clean and eat their own cod in one afternoon, it is hard to find a more authentic setting than Quidi Vidi.
