About Bridge Walk
Bridge Walk is a guided tour along the maintenance catwalk slung underneath the New River Gorge Bridge at Lansing, West Virginia. The walkway sits 25 feet below the bridge deck and 851 feet above the river, and it is the only way for the public to get out under the span on any day other than Bridge Day.
The catwalk itself runs about 3,030 feet, and with the approach and exit paths a tour covers roughly a mile and a quarter over two hours or more. Guests wear a full climbing harness and stay clipped to a continuous safety cable from the moment they step out, so there is no exposure to manage and no experience required. Guides talk through how the bridge was built, the steel it is made from, and the coal and railroad history in the canyon below, stopping often for photos through the girders.
More than 167,000 guests from all 50 states and 82 countries have made the crossing. Tours run year round, including through winter when the leaves are down and the gorge opens up, and the minimum requirements are straightforward: 48 inches tall, at least 10 years old and under 285 pounds. It pairs naturally with a rafting or climbing day since the whole thing takes a morning or an afternoon.
