Bright ski hire, day trips and summer guide

A valley town on the Ovens River with three mountains in reach. The two hire shops on Ireland Street, how Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buffalo compare for a day out, the pubs and gin bar in town, and the rail trail, Mystic and the river once it warms up.

  • 3.5 hours from Melbourne by car
  • 52 km to Mt Hotham, with a day bus from $69
  • 35 km to Mt Buffalo, free to enter all year
  • $70 adult ski or board package a day in town, 2026
  • Free chain hire with two sets of skis or boards
  • 45 km+ of trail at Mystic Bike Park above town

Is Bright a good base for skiing?

Yes, if you're happy to drive or ride the bus up each day. Bright has no lifts, but Mt Buffalo is 35 km away with free entry, Hotham is 52 km with a day bus from $69, and Falls Creek is about 60 km over Tawonga Gap. Hire skis and chains on Ireland Street the evening before, since Bright Ski Centre stays open until 7pm in the snow season.

How do people spend a summer day in Bright?

Hire a bike and ride the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail from the clock tower, take the uplift at Mystic Bike Park above town, fly a tandem paraglider off the Mystic launch, or swim and paddle the Ovens River. Mount Buffalo, 35 km away, has The Horn, the Gorge and swimming at Lake Catani.

Where to hire

Hire in Bright before you drive up?

For a day trip, yes. Bright Ski Centre opens at 7am in the snow season and hires chains too, and Mt Buffalo has no hire on the mountain.

  • Hours. In the snow season Bright Ski Centre opens 7am to 7pm Saturday to Thursday and stays open late on Fridays.
  • Chains. Bright Ski Centre's König chains are $50 a day on their own, $40 with one hire item and free with two sets of skis or boards. Ray's in Myrtleford makes the same free-with-two offer.
  • Kids. Anyone under 18 pays $55 a day for a ski or board package at Bright Ski Centre, with a helmet thrown in.
  • Booking ahead. An online booking at Bright Ski Centre doesn't hold gear or skip the line, so allow at least 30 minutes for fitting.
  • Cross-country and touring. Everest Sports needs a day's notice to have gear ready in Bright. Its online bookings default to pickup at its Windy Corner shop at Falls Creek.

Three drives from the clock tower

Carry chains on all three roads in the snow season; on Mt Buffalo, when the entry signs say so.

Mount Buffalo
About 45 minutes through Porepunkah, with no entry fee and toboggan areas at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley
35 km
Mt Hotham
South through Harrietville; $69 a car a day in 2026, or the bus from $69
52 km
Falls Creek
Over Tawonga Gap and up from Mount Beauty, about 1.5 hours; entry from $69
60 km

Getting to Bright, and up from it

Bright is about 3.5 hours from Melbourne on the Hume and the Snow Road through Milawa, and roughly seven hours from Sydney. Wangaratta is 75 km away, under an hour.

The Porepunkah town sign beside the Great Alpine Road, with the ranges behind

The Hotham bus from town

The Hotham bus stops outside the Alpine Hotel on Anderson Street, and HothamBus day tours from Bright start at $69. Park free all day on Wood Street, opposite the hotel.

Train and bus

V/Line runs daily buses between Bright and Wangaratta station, and most connect with Melbourne trains.

Alps Link

Dyson's public bus runs Bright, Harrietville, Hotham, Dinner Plain and Omeo three days a week, on different summer and winter timetables.

Snow chains

The law says carry chains between Harrietville and Omeo in the declared snow season, even if you drive straight over. On Mt Buffalo every car, 4WDs included, must carry them when the entry station is signed.

Entry fees

Hotham charged $69 a car a day in 2026 and Falls Creek from $69. Mount Buffalo charges nothing at any time of year. Mount Buffalo →

Fuel and groceries

BP on Delany Avenue, Caltex on Gavan Street and Shell on Anderson Street, plus the IGA on Ireland Street and Woolworths on Gavan Street. Fill up before the climb, since Hotham sells no fuel; Bright stocks alpine diesel.

Flying in

Albury has Qantas and Rex flights and is about 1.5 hours away by car, though public buses don't stop at the airport. Porepunkah Airfield takes private and charter planes.

Hotham, Falls Creek or Mt Buffalo for the day

Bright sits at 319 m on the Ovens River with no lifts of its own. Mt Buffalo is the nearest snow, and Hotham and Falls Creek are 52 to 60 km up the valley.

Mt Hotham, 52 km

The closest lift-served resort and the only one with a day bus from Bright. The village sits on top of the runs, and the chairs carry skiers only, with no scenic rides. Dinner Plain, just past it, has free entry and a toboggan slope.

Falls Creek, about 60 km

Over Tawonga Gap to Mount Beauty, then up, about 1.5 hours. A walkable village that suits a group with non-skiers, and Halley's Chair runs scenic rides up to Cloud 9 on some days. The day coach runs from Tawonga South; coaches from Melbourne stop in Bright on the way up.

Mount Buffalo, 35 km

The free one, about 45 minutes away, with managed toboggan and snow play at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley and marked cross-country trails at Cresta. There are no lifts, so bring toboggans from town. The Chalet cafe is open again on weekends and Victorian public holidays.

Passes

Hotham and Falls Creek are both on the Epic Australia Pass, so one season pass covers both. Mount Buffalo needs no ticket.

Mount Buffalo's ski history

Australia's first ski tow ran here, and the Chalet, built in 1910, was the first ski resort in the Victorian Alps. It closed in 2007 and is reopening in stages under a 40-year lease signed in 2024.

Local tips

What people who know Bright pass on

Mostly about the drive up and the weeks when the town is full.

  1. Heading over the top to Dinner Plain or Omeo, carry chains the whole way from Harrietville, even if you never stop at Hotham. Regulars put the fine near $900.
  2. Entry is charged per car, so a carload saves by driving, while a solo skier usually does better on the HothamBus.
  3. For a snow day that costs nothing to get into, take toboggans hired in town to Mount Buffalo.
  4. Check Mystic's uplift days before you plan around them. Shuttles run Friday to Sunday in winter and Thursday to Monday in the January peak, and pine harvesting can close trails.
  5. Locals rate autumn as Bright's best season. The European street trees turn by late April, and the town holds the Bright Autumn Festival.
  6. From Boxing Day to the end of January the valley is packed, so book bikes and tours ahead.
