Where to hire

Hire at the resort or on the drive in?

Hiring at the resort saves a stop on the way up. Talbingo and Cooma publish their prices, and two shops there hand gear over the afternoon before.

  • Price. goPLAYoutside charges $45 online or $50 walk-in for an adult ski package, and Village Ski $50 with a helmet. Selwyn hasn't put its 2027 hire prices online yet.
  • The day before. goPLAYoutside and Rhythm let you collect from 4pm the day before. Selwyn has no overnight storage, so resort gear is picked up and returned on the day.
  • Returns. goPLAYoutside wants gear back by 6pm on your last day. The resort gives no refund if you bring it back early.
  • Chains. goPLAYoutside hires diamond chains for $36 a day online and ladder chains for $27, and both Cooma shops hire them too. The Selwyn Gift Shop sells chains but doesn't hire them.
  • Gloves and goggles. The resort won't hire these out, so bring your own or buy them at the resort shop.

Driving to Selwyn

Selwyn is 2.5 hours from Canberra or Wagga Wagga, 5 to 6.5 from Sydney and 5 to 7.5 from Melbourne. There are no beds on the mountain, so families base themselves in Adaminaby, Talbingo or Tumut.

A row of shops in Adaminaby on a clear winter day, June 2026

Fill up before the climb

Selwyn sells no petrol or diesel and has no EV chargers. The last pumps are in Adaminaby, Talbingo, Tumut and Cooma, and the nearest chargers are at Providence Portal.

Snow chains

Selwyn asks every 2WD to carry chains that fit on the Snowy Mountains Highway from June to September. Two chain-fitting bays near Kiandra, at Sawyers Hill and Denison Campground, each take up to 10 cars. Selwyn road advice →

Park entry

$29 per car per day from the June to the October long weekend, paid at the machines beside the Selwyn car park or in the Park'nPay app. Of the annual passes, only the All Parks Pass covers the snowfields. Park visitor info →

Heavy trucks

Snowy 2.0 construction puts more trucks on the highway, especially around Pine Valley. Allow extra time.

Roads closed in winter

Kings Cross Road past the resort and the Khancoban-Cabramurra Road close from the June to the October long weekend, so come in on the Snowy Mountains Highway.

Without a car

No public bus runs to Selwyn. Riverina Adventure Sports runs snow bus day trips from Wagga Wagga, and the closest airport with regular flights is Canberra.

Parking

Day parking and an overflow lot sit beside the Selwyn Centre. On a busy day in 2023 the car park was nearly full by lunch.

The slopes at Selwyn

Australia's most northerly resort runs from 1,492 m to 1,614 m over 45 hectares, most of it beginner and intermediate terrain. The January 2020 bushfires destroyed it, and it reopened on 10 June 2023 with everything in the new Selwyn Centre.

First-timers

The beginner trails start at the Selwyn Centre: Sunny Side, Beginner Bliss, Easy Street and Home Run. Group ski lessons take kids from 4 and snowboard lessons from 7, and group lessons must be booked ahead.

Tobogganing

The toboggan park has its own slope beside the Selwyn Centre, a 150 m carpet and its own snowmaking. Sleds come with the pass and you can't bring your own. Snow tubing costs extra, for kids 5 and over and at least 110 cm tall.

Intermediates

Long Arm, at 800 m, is the longest run, and Township is a blue. Regulars say confident intermediates may tire of it within a day.

Advanced

The black runs come off the Race Course T-Bar: Race Course, Pig Gully, Plum Pine and Gallah's Gully. Race Course is the steepest pitch on the hill.

Cross-country and history

Cross-country trails leave from the day car park. Kiandra, 7 km down the road, is where gold miners skied on fence palings in 1861, and its old lifts, including Australia's first T-bar, moved to Selwyn in 1978.

Local tips

What regulars tell first-timers

Advice from people who drive to Selwyn, checked against the resort's own rules.

  1. Look at the snow cams before you book. At around 1,600 m Selwyn can lose its snow to rain, and the 2026 season ended on 23 August.
  2. A lift pass doesn't get you into the toboggan park, and a toboggan pass doesn't get you on the lifts. Buy the one your family will use.
  3. In school holidays, book hire and lessons ahead. Lift and toboggan passes rarely sell out, but hire and lessons can, and the walk-up lines get long.
  4. Coming from Sydney or the Riverina, look for a bed in Tumut or Talbingo. Locals say holiday rates there are well below Jindabyne's.
  5. For free snow play, park safely off the highway near Kiandra or go to Three Mile Dam. The park fee is charged on Link Road into the resort.
  6. Watch for cheap passes. Costco sold $69.99 day vouchers in 2026, Early Bird season passes go on sale in February, and nearby postcodes get a locals season pass in April.
  7. Plan each day as a round trip. Nothing stays on the mountain overnight, people or gear.
