Sixteen places to rent skis, boards, Nordic gear or a ski bike around Truckee, with the day rate wherever a shop prints one. Further down are the highway to each mountain, chain control over Donner Summit, the free TART buses, and the bikes and boats Truckee rents from June.

Do Truckee's ski shops beat the resort rental counters?
In town, if you might ski more than one mountain. Tahoe Sports Hub posts an adult package at $49 and Tahoe Dave's at $54, and Tahoe Dave's lets you collect after 3pm the evening before for no extra cost. A resort counter makes sense only for the mountain it sits on, and Palisades sets its rental prices by demand. If you'd rather not stand in a shop at all, Black Tie and Ski Butlers deliver to your rental house.
What do Truckee shops rent after the ski season?
Mountain bikes and e-bikes from four shops in town, boats and paddle craft on Donner Lake, and rafts, tubes, kayaks and SUPs for the Truckee River from Tahoe Sports Hub on West River Street. Northstar's lift-served bike park opened on June 12 in 2026.
West River Street to the summit
Four shops in town rent skis and boards, a fifth rents ski bikes, and two companies deliver. Every resort, from Palisades to the Donner Summit hills, runs its own counter, and two Nordic centers rent cross-country skis. Only three shops print a day rate.

Rates copied from the shops' websites on October 31, 2026. Neither Tahoe Dave's nor Tahoe Sports Hub puts a season on its rate card, so confirm the number when you reserve.
Tahoe Sports Hub trades skis for rafts and bikes, Northstar turns its chairs over to downhill riders, and two miles west of downtown the marina and West End Beach rent boats and paddleboards on Donner Lake.

Start Haus bikes aren't allowed in the Northstar or Boreal bike parks, so rent from the resort for those.

Truckee is where SR 89, SR 267 and Old 40 split off toward three different mountains. Gear from a town shop goes wherever the snow report sends you that morning.
Which road goes to which mountain
Palisades and Northstar are also on free TART bus routes.
Donner Pass Road leaves downtown, runs the length of Donner Lake and climbs past 7,000 ft to five ski areas. Sugar Bowl averages 500 inches of snow a winter against 206.6 in town, which is why chains can be up on the pass while Commercial Row is bare.

Truckee to Sugar Bowl on Old 40
Coming from the Bay Area instead, leave I-80 at exit 174 (Norden/Soda Springs) and drive 3.5 miles east on Highway 40.
Reno-Tahoe International is about 36 miles east on I-80, and Sacramento's airport about 120 miles west, over Donner Summit. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops at the depot on Donner Pass Road once a day each way.

Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit runs free routes to Olympic Valley on SR 89 and to Northstar and the airport on SR 267, and the Truckee Local runs from the depot along Donner Pass Road to Coldstream. TART Connect comes to the curb on demand inside the Truckee zone, until 10pm in fall and midnight in winter, and most vans carry ski racks.
At R-1, cars and light trucks with snow tires on both drive wheels may skip chains but must carry them. At R-2, only 4WD or AWD with snow-tread tires on all four wheels gets an exemption, still with chains aboard. At R-3, everyone chains up. Installers on the shoulder work for themselves: get a receipt and their badge number. Chain controls →
Spinouts and truck crashes shut the interstate, sometimes for hours. Call CHIN on 800-427-7623 or check QuickMap before leaving Sacramento or Reno.
From December 5 to April 11, every lot needs a reservation on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Free ones go live on Tuesdays, half at noon and half at 7pm, starting December 16; a paid one is $30 a car. Without one, you can park free after 1pm. You book a base, Village or Alpine Lodge, and parking at the other one costs you. Parking program →
From November 1 to April 30 you can't leave a car on any Town road or right-of-way. Tucking it behind the snow poles still gets it ticketed or towed.
Donner Pass Road, Bridge Street and Church Street cost $1.50 an hour; Jibboom Street, West River Street and the Railyard lots $1. The easternmost Railyard lot is free for the first 2 hours. Pay by text or in the Flowbird app.
Last season the Town ran free weekend buses to Palisades every 20 minutes from the school lot at 11603 Donner Pass Road, and to Northstar hourly from 10266 Truckee Airport Road. The 2026/27 schedule isn't published yet.
North Lake Tahoe Express runs a shuttle all year between Reno-Tahoe and the Truckee and north shore area.
Palisades Tahoe sits south of town on SR 89 and opens November 25, 2026. Northstar is southeast on SR 267 and hasn't confirmed its date. One is on Ikon and the other on Epic, so the pass in your wallet usually decides the morning.

Another 2,400 acres and 13 lifts under Ward Peak, linked by the Base-to-Base Gondola since 2022. It has its own lots, and a parking reservation is good at one base only.
3,170 acres, 20 lifts and 10 terrain parks, with 60% of the trails rated intermediate. You load the Big Springs Gondola from the village, which has a skating rink in winter. Vail Resorts has run it since 2010.
A small hill for families inside the subdivision, run by the Tahoe Donner Association, with plenty of beginner terrain, lessons from age 3 and a lodge rebuilt for 2025/26. Its season pass prices go up on December 1.
Ikon covers Palisades, which also sells its own Midweek Pass. The 2026/27 Epic Pass starts at $1,089, and the $809 Epic Local blocks Northstar on peak dates. Sugar Bowl sells its own, with half-price tickets at Mountain Collective resorts.
