Springfield, Castle Hill and the SH73 club fields

Springfield is a town of about 330 with a concrete Simpsons doughnut and the last fuel pump before Porters Pass. Porters and four club fields sit up the road from it, and only Porters rents a full package on the hill, so collect skis, chains and a tow belt before you leave the plains.

Where do you rent skis for the Craigieburn club fields?

In Christchurch or Springfield. Broken River, Craigieburn and Mt Olympus have no ski rental, and Mt Cheeseman's rental department stayed closed in winter 2026. Gnomes in Christchurch hires an adult package from $49 with pickup after 2pm the day before, and Smylies in Springfield rents mainly to its shuttle and stay guests, and to others who call ahead. Porters is the one field with a full rental shop, at $72 a day.

Where do climbers and mountain bikers go around Castle Hill in summer?

Boulder the limestone at Kura Tāwhiti or Flock Hill on a crash pad from Smylies or Porters Lodge, wade through Cave Stream, or ride the 24 km Craigieburn Trail from Flock Hill to Castle Hill. Porters Lodge reopened for summer on 30 October 2026 with free flow trails and hardtails to hire from $20 an hour.

Skis, boards and tow belts for the SH73 fields

Porters runs the only full rental shop on these mountains, and Temple Basin keeps a small stock at the top of its walk. For Cheeseman, Broken River, Craigieburn and Olympus you load skis in Christchurch or Springfield, plus something to grip a rope tow.

Castle Hill basin in summer

When the tows stop, climbers and riders take over the basin. The limestone tors of Kura Tāwhiti sit right beside the highway, and the Craigieburn Trail strings singletrack together with short stretches of ski field road.

Bring your own skis up, or rent at Porters?

Renting at Porters means nothing to strap to the roof. Anywhere else, you turn up with skis, boots and a way to hang on to a fast rope.

  • Price. A standard adult package costs $49 a day at Gnomes against $72 at the Porters shop, which also does a half day for $47.
  • The tows. Broken River, Craigieburn and Mt Olympus run nutcracker rope tows and rent no skis, only the gear for the tows. Craigieburn lends nutcrackers free against a $20 or license deposit, Mt Olympus hires a belt and nutcracker for $5 a day from its Access Tow Container, and Broken River hires tow belts and harnesses at the Ticket Office. Wear leather gloves or glove protectors, since the rope chews through good gloves.
  • Mt Cheeseman. Its rental department and ski school didn't run in winter 2026, and the field opened Thursday to Sunday only. The learners' tow there needs no nutcracker.
  • Chains. Gnomes hires car chains at $30 a day and 4WD chains at $35. Mt Cheeseman warns that tire socks won't do on its road.

Temple Basin, up from Arthur's Pass

No road reaches this field on the Main Divide. You leave the car at the summit of the pass, send your bags up on the goods lift and climb 400 m on foot up a rocky track.

  • The walk. Allow 40 to 60 minutes from the car park, in boots or trail shoes rather than ski boots.
  • Goods lift. Free, 800 m west of the car park. Saturday and Sunday it loads from 8:30am to noon and 4 to 6pm; Monday to Thursday, mornings only from 9 to 11:30am.
  • Night tow. Every Temple Basin lift pass covers night skiing on Temple Tow when conditions allow, and under-11s ski free.
  • Which tows. Learners stay on Cassidy Tow and the lower half of Temple Tow. Strong skiers willing to hike head for Temple, Blimit and Cassidy peaks or drop into the Mingha.
  • The season. It usually opens in early July and runs to late September or early October. The 2026 winter has finished, and the club hasn't announced 2027 dates.
  • Nights on the hill. Stay in the club's catered lodges (the bar pours NZ wine and craft beer, no BYO). Freedom camping is banned at the Temple Basin car park; the DOC site at Avalanche Creek Shelter is $15 a person.

Getting up SH73 to the fields

Springfield sits 65 km out of Christchurch on the Great Alpine Highway. Most of the fields quote about 90 minutes from Christchurch, and Temple Basin is 2 hours 20 minutes plus the walk.

A car pulled over beside SH73 near Porters Pass, with fresh snow on the paddock and the hills behind

Smylies ski shuttle

Porters return trips ran Friday to Sunday in 2026 and every day from 4 to 19 July, leaving the Christchurch Bus Exchange at 7:15am and Springfield at 8:30am. One-way transfers to the club fields ran Friday to Sunday.

Chains

Every field tells you to carry them, and Broken River says so even for four-wheel drives. Craigieburn wants chains in every vehicle, every time.

The access roads

Porters: 6 km of gravel that isn't steep. Broken River and Craigieburn: 6 km each, with no campervans. Mt Olympus: proper 4WD with clearance, and phone reception drops out halfway up.

Coach

East West Coaches runs between Christchurch and Greymouth every day, stopping at Springfield, Castle Hill, Flock Hill and Arthur's Pass. The driver can drop you at the foot of Broken River Road, but the 6 km up is yours to sort out. Timetable →

TranzAlpine

Springfield is the train's last stop before the mountains. On the summer timetable it leaves Christchurch at 8:15am and pulls into Arthur's Pass at 10:40am, 150 m from the DOC visitor center.

Kea

At the club field car parks the kea chew rubber off parked cars. Never feed them, and bring something to cover what you can.

Sharing a ride

Snowpool and the Ski the Clubbies Ride Share group on Facebook match drivers with spare seats. Snow Express runs private door-to-door transfers to Porters.

Porters and the four club fields

Porters is the commercial field, with a quad chair, groomed runs and snowmaking since 1991. Clubs run the rest, and Broken River's founders cut their road with picks and shovels in 1951.

Porters

678 m of vertical from a 1,310 m base across 285 ha. Half the terrain is rated advanced, with named areas like McNulty's Basin, Julian's Bowl and the Aorangi Chutes. An afternoon pass from 12:30pm costs $114.

Mt Cheeseman

Two T-bars and a learners' rope tow from a base at 1,540 m, with groomed intermediate runs and steeper off-piste. You drop your gear at the Daylodge, 20 m from the lifts. After three hard winters it opened Thursday to Sunday in 2026.

Broken River

From the Hanomag car park the club-built Tyndall Tramway takes four minutes to haul you 320 m up to the lodges. Above it, three fast rope tows cover 175 ha, mostly ungroomed, and Friday night skiing costs $50. There are no half-day passes.

Craigieburn Valley

Three rope tows, 500 m of lift vertical and not a groomer anywhere. CV caters only to intermediate and advanced skiers and asks first-timers to be confident on chairlift blue runs. In 2026 it rested on Mondays and Tuesdays unless it snowed big.

Mt Olympus

Reached from SH77 by Lake Coleridge, not SH73. Four rope tows run up a south-facing basin that collects about 4.5 m of snow a year, with a hot tub and the Far Canal Bar at the lodge. Carry a transceiver, shovel and probe to hike beyond the tows.

Ungroomed steeps, built for skiers who already ride blues with ease.

Mt Olympus

A 4WD-only road with no phone signal on the upper half.

Temple Basin

Gentle tows at the bottom, once you've walked up to them.

Learned on the gravel

Before your first trip up SH73

Gravel roads, nutcracker tows and kea in the car park catch out most newcomers to the Craigieburn Range.

  1. Fill the tank in Springfield. Past it there's no fuel until the Arthur's Pass store, and that closes at 4:30pm.
  2. Count the turnoffs past Castle Hill Village: Cheeseman just before the Broken River Bridge, then Broken River Road, then Craigieburn. Don't turn early for CV, or you'll end up at Broken River.
  3. Leave a campervan at the bottom of the Broken River and Craigieburn roads. Neither road suits one.
  4. On the Mt Olympus road your phone dies halfway up. Check the radio at Bottom Hut before you carry on.
  5. A Broken River day pass also works on Craigieburn's tows the same day, and tourers link the two fields along the ridge.
  6. Never used a nutcracker? Craigieburn has a practice rope at the Ticket Office, and Broken River's tows can be slowed down at the press of a button.
  7. On chain days at Porters, park at the chain-fitting area and take the free shuttle up; it runs from 8:45am on weekends.
  8. Check each field's own snow report that morning. Mt Cheeseman managed two operating days in 2025 and opened Thursday to Sunday only in 2026, and Craigieburn rested on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  9. Heading to Arthur's Pass for a few days? Buy groceries and stove fuel in Christchurch first, since the village store carries a limited range.
  10. Don't plan to sleep at Lake Lyndon or the Cave Stream car park. Kowhai Pass Reserve, 1 km east of Springfield, has a dump station and $2 coin showers, with no bookings taken.
