Marysville and Lake Mountain guide

Melbourne's closest snow has toboggan runs, groomed cross-country trails and no chairlift at all. Skis, snowshoes and chains come from the shops below it, at Narbethong on the way in or on Murchison Street in Marysville, the town rebuilt after the 2009 fires.

Can you hire skis at Lake Mountain?

Only if you come with a school group. The resort rents jackets, pants, kids' snow suits and snow boots at $29 each, so skis, snowshoes and wheel chains come from the shops below. Lake Mountain Ski Hire at Narbethong charged $35 for an adult classic set in 2026, and Marysville Ski Centre on Murchison Street starts at $50.

Is there a bike shuttle up Lake Mountain this summer?

No. For 2026/27 the resort runs no shuttle and has stopped issuing permits while it sorts out a commercial license for the Cascades Trail, and neither trail lists any bike hire. Riders leave one car where the trail comes out on Buxton-Marysville Road and drive up in another. Entry is free from November to April, but the facilities are shut, so carry water.

The bike trails open from Cup Weekend at the start of November, entry costs nothing, and wildflowers come out along Echo Flat from late spring. The cafe stays shut until winter, so bring lunch to cook on the resort's electric barbecues.

Narbethong comes first

Hire at Narbethong or in Marysville?

Coming from Melbourne you pass Narbethong first, then turn off for Marysville. Narbethong was cheaper in 2026, while Marysville has more skis to choose from and is the last place to hire chains before the climb.

  • Skis. An adult classic set was $35 at Lake Mountain Ski Hire in 2026, against $50 for Marysville Ski Centre's standard beginner skis. For skating, Narbethong charged $45 and Marysville starts at $60, and only Marysville has demo and racing skis.
  • Clothing. An insulated jacket was $18 at Narbethong in 2026 and is $20 in Marysville, against $29 an item on the mountain. Narbethong also hired gloves at $10, which the resort won't do for hygiene reasons.
  • Chains. Lake Mountain Ski Hire charged from $50 for small chains and $60 for large ones in 2026, and Marysville Ski Centre hires from $50, diamond-pattern only. Cross Country Ski Hire has chains too. Nobody hires them once you're on the mountain.
  • Days open. Outside the July school holidays Marysville Ski Centre shuts on Tuesday and Wednesday, the same days as the resort. Lake Mountain Ski Hire opens at 8am on weekdays and 7am on weekends in the snow season.
  • Paying. Lake Mountain Ski Hire takes cash and EFTPOS, worth knowing because the resort has been card only since winter 2025.

Buxton and Taggerty, north on the Maroondah Highway

Buxton is the third corner of the Triangle, where Buxton-Marysville Road meets the Maroondah Highway past the golf course, and Taggerty sits further up the highway toward Alexandra. Neither has a hire shop, but between them they cover lunch on the drive home and a Sunday beer in Taggerty.

  • Catch your lunch. Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm at 2118 Maroondah Highway opens every day from 10 to 5. You catch your own trout or salmon beside the Steavenson River, with a catch guaranteed, and the smokehouse uses mountain ash and sells caviar.
  • Bucky Burgers. The Igloo Roadhouse in Buxton is the burger stop the resort itself points people to.
  • Taggerty General Store. A licensed cafe with groceries and a bottle shop at 26 Taggerty-Thornton Road, open 8am to 6pm daily, with pizza on Friday nights.
  • Bonfire Station. A family-owned microbrewery on Yellow Creek Road, Taggerty, with a beer garden and wood-fired pizza from noon to 8pm on Sundays, on dates listed through to June 2027.
  • The Triangle by bike. A 36 km road loop joins Marysville, Narbethong and Buxton, with Gould Memorial Drive and its poplars on the way.

The resort's distances and drive times to Lake Mountain.

Getting to Marysville and up Lake Mountain

Allow 2 to 2.5 hours from Melbourne CBD, out through the Yarra Valley and over the Black Spur to Narbethong, then the Marysville turnoff. The town itself is about 90 minutes from the city.

Ridges seen from Lake Mountain covered in regrowth, with pale fire-killed trunks still standing above it

No bus to the snow

The resort runs no shuttle for the public. Without a car, take the train to Lilydale and McKenzie's Route 684 bus, which reaches Narbethong and Marysville once or twice a day, and plan on a night or two in town.

Chain days

Chains only matter when the resort declares a chain day. Then every 2WD must carry them until staff say to fit them, and 4WD and AWD drivers must know how to engage it. The day shows in the header of the resort's website and on yellow signs as you drive into Marysville. Arrive without chains and you'll be turned around at the gate, and staff can't help with fitting. Chain day rules →

Winter entry

In 2026 a car with up to nine seats paid $69. Anyone arriving by coach paid $22 a head, and $12 between the ages of 5 and 17. Entry is capped each day. On school-holiday weekends, once the car parks fill, tickets stop and the gate goes one-in-one-out, with waits that can run to several hours. Entry tickets →

Gate times

In the snow season cars go through the gate from 8am until 3pm. Allow 10 to 20 minutes from the gate to the main car park, and be on your way down by 3.30pm, because the gate is locked from 4pm.

Bring a card

The resort has taken only debit and credit cards since winter 2025.

No taxis or Ubers

Bespoke Driven Tours in Narbethong fills the gap with private transfers for up to six people.

Fuel, water and dogs

Fill the tank in Marysville or Narbethong and the water bottles in town, since the mountain has no drinking water. Pets of any kind aren't allowed at the resort.

Lake Mountain: toboggan runs, snow play and cross-country trails

Families make up about 80% of visitors. Lake Mountain's 2026 winter ran 6 June to 30 August, open daily in the July school holidays and Thursday to Monday the rest of the time.

Toddlers

The Mini Run is fenced, has a magic carpet and runs on snowmaking. The snow play area is just past it, north of the main building.

Tobogganing

The Village Run is the family run, also with a magic carpet and snowmaking. Koala Creek is longer and steeper and opens on natural snow only. A ticket for anyone 6 or over cost $33 in 2026 with a toboggan included, and $11 for children 5 and under, who don't get one. A toboggan brought from home stays in the car, since only the resort's go on the runs.

Cross-country, easy

Echo Flat (3.8 km) is one of the resort's easiest, along with Muster (2.5 km), Snowgum (1.3 km) and the two-way Home trail (1 km).

Cross-country, harder

Woollybutt climbs steeply both ways over 1.9 km, Panorama runs one way for 2.6 km, and the resort suggests saving the downhill Royston Road (1.7 km) for last. Jubilee has long and short loops over 5 km, and the Hut Trail is ungroomed and not regularly patrolled.

Snowshoe walks

The Summit Walk is 1.8 km return to the 1,433 m top, looking north to the Alps and south over Marysville toward Melbourne. Leadbeaters' Walk, 600 m return from the southeast corner of the car park, has signs about the 1939 and 2009 fires.

What it doesn't have

Chairlifts, snowboarding, lessons of any kind (even for schools), guided tours and beds. Everyone drives back down before the gate locks at 4pm.

Lake Mountain day-trip tips

The mountain hires no skis or chains, takes no cash and has no drinking water, so most of this list gets done in Marysville or before you leave home.

  1. Avoid a Tuesday or Wednesday outside the July holidays, when the gate stays shut. In 2026 it opened on those two days only between 29 June and 10 July.
  2. The $69 gate fee covers a whole car of up to nine seats, so fill it. On school-holiday weekends buy before you leave home and aim to be there before 11am.
  3. Sort gloves in town. The resort doesn't hire gloves, socks, goggles or beanies, and sells gloves from about $20, while Lake Mountain Ski Hire hired them out for $10 in 2026.
  4. Kids in gumboots get cold feet fast. Children's snow boots are $15 to hire at Narbethong.
  5. Watch for the yellow signs as you come into Marysville. If they say it's a chain day, hire chains on Murchison Street before you head up.
  6. Koala Creek is the run older kids want, but it only opens on natural snow. Check the snow report before you promise it.
  7. At Narbethong, look for Frosty the Snowman at the entrance. Lake Mountain Ski Hire's website offers a discount if you mention him.
  8. After dinner, drive to Steavenson Falls. The 84 m falls are floodlit after dark until midnight, and parking costs a small fee.
  9. In summer, the only toilets are at the Cascades trailhead by the gate, and the resort asks you to keep an eye out for snakes.
