National Park Village ski hire and Whakapapa guide

A railway town on the SH4 and SH47 junction, 20 minutes below the Whakapapa lifts. Where to hire, which shuttle to catch from the Park and Ride, how Bruce Road behaves in winter, Tukino across the mountain, and the Crossing, Fishers Track and rail carts that take over once the lifts stop.

Who hires skis for Whakapapa, and what does a day cost?

Whakapapa's own rental shops at the base area and in Happy Valley put an adult ski set, or a snowboard and boots, at $54 a day, and they're the only ones that print a price or book online. Staying down in National Park Village? The Alpine Centre on Carroll Street opens at 7:30am and stays open until midnight on peak-season Fridays.

What does National Park Village offer once the snow goes?

Walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on a shuttle from the village (Tongariro Crossing Shuttles charges $75 return, first bus 5:45am), ride Fishers Track downhill from the station, or take the 42 Traverse from SH47 to Owhango. Forgotten World's rail carts run out of Taumarunui, 30 minutes away, until 15 May 2027.

Where to stay and hire

Base yourself in National Park or up the hill?

National Park Village has the hire shop, the shuttles, fuel and the pubs. Whakapapa Village is closer to the lifts, but its roadside parking is short-stay in winter.

  • Parking. Along SH48 in Whakapapa Village, winter parking is capped at 3 hours unless you get a permit from the visitor center. The Park and Ride next to National Park station has 197 free spaces and 13 secure ones, with showers and EV charging.
  • Shuttles. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles, National Park Shuttles and Summit Shuttles all run to the ski field from $60 return. Whakapapa Village has no Park and Ride of its own, so guests up there arrange a seat through their accommodation, and Summit Shuttles collects from Skotel.
  • Gear. The Alpine Centre opens at 7:30am daily in winter and shuts at 6pm most nights. If a boot pinches once you're up the hill, Whakapapa's two shops on the mountain swap sizes on the day.
  • Fuel and groceries. The service station on the SH4 and SH47 corner sells fuel and runs the Four Square, 7am to 7pm every day.

Tukino, the club field on the Desert Road side

Tukino is on the eastern face of Ruapehu and you reach it from the Desert Road, so from National Park it means driving right around the mountain. Three clubs run it with volunteers, and anyone can buy a pass.

  • Lifts. Three Nutcracker rope tows, with the belts lent free with your pass, plus cat skiing to the upper mountain. The clubs list over 300 m of vertical across 170 hectares.
  • 2026 passes. The club priced a non-member day at $90 for adults, $70 for students and $50 for youth, with children free. Two adults with two youth came to $240 on the family pass, and half days started at 1pm.
  • Pack lunch. The field has no food service, and there's no fuel on the access road, so fill up before you turn off SH1.

Getting to National Park Village

The village sits where SH4 meets SH47, roughly halfway between Auckland and Wellington. The nearest airport is Taupō, about 1 hour 20 minutes' drive from Whakapapa.

Train and bus

The Northern Explorer stops at National Park station, 825 m above sea level, just up the line from the Raurimu Spiral. InterCity runs daily from Wellington in about 6 hours, stopping on Findlay Street.

Bruce Road

SH48 and the 6 km above Whakapapa Village go by one name locally. In winter the road can be limited to cars with chains or 4WD, or shut to everyone, and Whakapapa's report shows which. Road report →

Parking at the ski area

About 1,800 spaces at the base are free, first come first served, and paid Platinum Parking sits closer to the lifts. Whakapapa asks people to carpool.

Park and Ride

Kiwi Camp on Findlay Street, beside the station, has free parking, cooktops, laundry and a dump station, and most pre-booked ski shuttles leave from here.

Fuel and EV charging

The service station on the SH4 and SH47 corner has fuel, EV chargers and a Four Square, open 7am to 7pm. There's also EV charging at the Park and Ride.

The other side of Ruapehu

Tūroa, on the Ohakune side of Ruapehu, is run by a separate company and sits 40 to 50 minutes away. Ohakune itself is 25 minutes south of the village.

Skiing Whakapapa, from Happy Valley up

550 ha and 690 m of vertical, run since 2025 by Whakapapa Holdings on a 10-year concession after Ruapehu Alpine Lifts went into administration. The 2026 season ran from 30 May to 25 October, and 2027 is set for May to October.

First day on snow

Happy Valley has a valley of its own below the base area. Two 26-person glass lifts drop 22 m into it, and down there you get magic carpets, the Double Happy chair, a sledding area, a rental shop and a bistro, all on a Beginner Area Day Pass.

Learn to Ski package

A group lesson of 1 hour 50 minutes, rental, an All Mountain pass and a same-day Sky Waka ride for $199 adult or $169 youth. On its own, the 2027 adult day pass has a base rate of $159.

Intermediates

Half the terrain is rated intermediate, spread over 67 named trails and lifts that include the Rangatira Express, West Ridge Quad and Delta Quad. The Sky Waka climbs 390 m to Knoll Ridge at 2,020 m.

Advanced

About a quarter of the terrain is rated advanced, and the lifts top out at 2,320 m.

Rime ice

Whakapapa says Ruapehu gathers more rime ice than any other ski area in the world. De-icing crews work the lifts on both sides before opening, and some days again once the lifts are running.

2027 season passes

Adults pay $499 on Early Bird from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, then $799. Kids 5 to 10 are $199 on Early Bird, under-5s and over-75s ski free, and a $49 deposit holds a pass.

Local tips

Before you head up Bruce Road

Nearly every tip here is about where to leave the car or which van to book, winter or summer.

  1. Planning a full day on the snow? Leave the car at the Park and Ride by the station and take a shuttle, because Whakapapa Village parking is 3 hours in winter and no Park and Ride runs from there.
  2. Open whakapapa.com/report before you leave the village. It says whether Bruce Road is open, chains only, 4WD only or closed.
  3. All three ski shuttles start at $60 return, so book the departure time that suits you and stop comparing prices.
  4. Arriving on a Friday night in peak season? The Alpine Centre stays open until midnight, so you can collect gear and make the first shuttle.
  5. Never skied before? The $199 Learn to Ski package bundles a lesson, rental, an All Mountain pass and a Sky Waka ride.
  6. Happy Valley has its own rental counter and bistro, so a beginner can hire, learn and eat lunch without going back up the glass lifts.
  7. In summer there's no visitor parking at Mangatepopo, the start of the Crossing. DOC asks walkers to book a shuttle seat or a guided walk instead.
  8. Between May and late October the Crossing turns into an alpine climb needing crampons, an ice axe and avalanche gear. Most shuttles stop, and the guided trips bring the gear and the transport.
  9. Fishers Track starts at the station Park and Ride. Book the 1:30pm pickup at the Kaitieke end before you set off.
  10. Ride the 42 Traverse from Kapoors Road on SH47 toward Owhango, the way that gives you about 520 m of net descent.
  11. Going to Tukino? Fill up at the village service station first, since the access road has no fuel and the field has no food.
  12. Maps now show Waimarino, the name the town took in 2024. The station, the train and most people here still say National Park.

How do I book ski hire for National Park Village online?

Through Whakapapa's own website, which sells day rental beside lift passes and the Learn to Ski package, making it the one ski hire business around here that books online. The Alpine Centre on Carroll Street takes e-bike bookings online but not ski hire, and Skotel's rental shop has no booking page, so ring either one or walk in. EquipDash is booking software a Carroll Street counter could add to its own site, so a skier stepping off the Northern Explorer collects boots and skis already sized and paid for.
