A farm town that grew up around an 1880 railway terminus where six roads meet, and now the place Mt Hutt skiers sleep, hire their skis and pick up chains before the gravel road.

Should Mt Hutt skiers rent gear in Methven or up the hill?
In Methven, the evening before. There's no accommodation on Mt Hutt, both town shops stay open until 7pm or later in winter, and McEwings ($49) and Big Al's ($59) publish their adult rates for a day. Hire chains with the skis, because they have to be in the car on every trip up the 14 km gravel access road.
What do people do around Methven in summer?
They jet boat through the Rakaia Gorge from the SH72 bridge, ride the free Mt Hutt Bike Park off the ski field road on a hire bike Big Al's drops there for them, or take a sunrise balloon flight that meets on Main Street. Ōpuke's hot pools, on Mount Hutt Station Road, finish the day.
Rental counters for Mt Hutt
McEwings on Main Street and Big Al's on The Square publish their winter prices, book online and hire out chains. The third counter is Mt Hutt's own, up at the base area.

Mt Hutt runs no lifts in summer, and the ski field road carries bikes instead, to the Bike Methven club's trails lower down. The rest of the summer trade is on the Rakaia River, in the air over the farms and in Ōpuke's pools.

The bike park is off the ski field road, about 30 minutes from town, and free to ride.
More than 40 km of trail built and run by the Bike Methven club, with free access. Bring your own bike or hire one in town.

Event calendar →E-bikes, full-suspension bikes, hardtails and kids' bikes, delivered to the bike park and picked up when you're done. Big Al's also rents discs for disc golf.

You'll sleep in Methven anyway, and picking up skis in town the evening before leaves the morning for the drive. Hiring at the base doesn't spare you the chains, which have to be in the car either way.
From Main Street to the Mt Hutt car park
About 30 to 35 minutes, with gravel for the final 14 km.
Methven sits on the western edge of the Canterbury Plains, 95 km from Christchurch and 34 km north of Ashburton. Mt Hutt is a 30 to 35 minute drive from town.

Methven Travel's Mt Hutt bus starts from its office at 160 Main Street, in the Memorial Hall next to the Blue Pub, and picks up from accommodation, from $35 return. The 2026 timetable had buses up at 7:45 and 9:45am, plus 11:30am on weekends and NZ school holidays, and down at 3pm (if enough people booked) and 4:15pm.
Carry chains on every trip up the 14 km access road. On 3 July 2026, the busiest day in a decade, six cars without them got stuck and held traffic up for as long as two hours. From 5 July, Mt Hutt brought in an $800 fine for drivers who ignore chain rules and block the road.
Snowfall or unsafe weather closes the road, and so, some days, does a full car park. Any vehicle can drive up, but campervans and other high-sided vehicles can be held back in bad weather.
Mt Hutt's report comes out at about 6am with the road, car park and chain status for the day. Read it before you leave Methven.
Snowman Shuttles leaves the Christchurch Bus Interchange at 7am on every day the mountain opens, calling at Church Corner and Rolleston, and leaves Mt Hutt at 4pm. The driver fits the chains, and the 2026 fare was $35 plus a booking fee.

Mt Hutt, Ōpuke in Māori, is run by NZSki and rises to 2,190 m. The World Ski Awards named it New Zealand's best ski resort every year from 2015 to 2024, and it often opens before any other field in the Southern Hemisphere.
The main lift from the base area is an eight-seater chair, the first in New Zealand. The rest of the lift list is a six-seater detachable chair, a triple chair and two learner conveyors.

Strong wind closes the field, sometimes with the road shut behind it. On 12 August 2010, gusts of up to 200 km/h kept about 1,200 people overnight in the base buildings. A MetService piece put wind closures at about one day in seven and quoted the nickname Mt Shut.
The Methven Lions Club pushed for a ski field in the late 1960s, and in 1971 local contractor Doug Hood drove a bulldozer up a ridge to prove a road could be built. Today's access road follows his track.

Conveyor learner areas at the base, but every lesson day starts with the gravel road.
Expert lines in The Towers and off the South Face.
