Hanmer Springs ski hire, bikes and the Jacks Pass road

Hanmer is a spa village first, built around 23 thermal and freshwater pools on Amuri Avenue. Skiers drive 17 km up Jacks Pass to the Amuri club field or 60 km round to Mt Lyford. Once the fields close, the bookings shift to bikes in Hanmer Forest and jet boats under the Waiau Ferry Bridge.

Where should I pick up hire skis for Hanmer Springs?

From the village, before the drive up Jacks Pass. The Hanmer Springs Ski Area keeps no hire gear on the field, so skis, boards and chains come from Ski Gear Direct at 20 Conical Hill Road, at $65 for an adult set. Mt Lyford hires at its own day lodge for $55, but it doesn't rent chains, so pick those up in town too.

Which summer bookings can I make in Hanmer Springs?

Bike hire on Conical Hill Road for Hanmer Forest, or a shuttle to Maling Pass and the St James Cycle Trail. Down at the Waiau Ferry Bridge, Hanmer Springs Attractions runs jet boats through the gorge, grade 2 rafting and a 35 m bungy. The Acheron Road through Molesworth has been open since 1 October, for traffic between 7am and 7pm.

Bikes, the Waiau and the high country

Hanmer Forest was planted on bare tussock from 1902, and its trails now start where the village streets end. The jet boats and the bungy work from the bridge on the road in, and Jacks Pass leads to the St James and Molesworth.

Load the car in the village

The club field on Mt St Patrick sells no food and keeps no hire gear, so whatever you need for the day leaves Hanmer with you.

  • Gear. The club's home page says in capital letters that no ski or snowboard hire gear is kept on the field. Ski Gear Direct's adult set is $65 whether it's skis or a board, with a child's ski set at $55 and a child's board at $50.
  • Chains. The club makes carrying them compulsory on the access road, and Ski Gear Direct hires them at $70 a day. With chains a 2WD normally gets up; later in the season 4WDs often go without fitting them.
  • Shuttle. Ski Gear Direct also runs the bus up the hill, $65 return for adults, $50 for kids and $210 for a family with up to three children.
  • First timers. The club's beginner package puts Ski Gear Direct gear, an hour's group lesson and the learners area together, from $155 for adults and $120 for children.
  • Lunch. Up top you get a self-catering kitchen and toastie machines in the Day Lodge, but nothing for sale, so stop at the Four Square at 12 Conical Hill Road on the way out.

Mt Lyford, the other field

Doug and Jenny Simpson started building the field and its log-chalet village off SH70 in 1986, and it is still family-run. Lyford drops 501 m off Mt Terako against the club field's 310 m, and rates three times as much of its terrain for beginners.

  • Lifts. A T-bar, two platters, a 180 m fixed-grip, two advanced rope tows and the express rope tow at Lake Stella, the original ski area, which has reopened.
  • Passes. $129 for an adult day or $91 after 12:30pm, $59 for 7 to 17 year olds, and free under 7 or over 75. Neither Epic nor Ikon covers it.
  • Never Ever. A full-day pass, hire and a one-hour lesson with no more than three to a class, $199 for an adult skier.
  • Off the skis. Snow tubing at $40 an hour, a $25 sled pass, and a $20 dog pass worn on your zip; Lyford calls itself one of the only dog-friendly ski areas in the country.
  • No signal. There's no cell coverage in the back basin and no public wifi.
  • Chains. Carry a set. Lyford doesn't hire them, so get them at Ski Gear Direct before leaving Hanmer.

Hanmer Springs Ski Area on Mt St Patrick

North Canterbury farmers formed the Amuri Ski Club in 1957, and volunteers still run the field as a non-profit. It has 52 ha in bounds and 310 m of vertical below a 1,769 m top, and the club rates it 10% beginner, 60% intermediate and 30% advanced.

Beginners

A fixed-grip learners tow on the groomed beginners area. Lessons run at weekends only and must be booked ($35 adult, $30 child for a group), and an adult pass for the beginner area alone is $55.

Intermediates

Most of the field. Shirtfront, Table Top and parts of Bordeaux Basin are groomed when the snow allows, and the 807 m Poma, which the club calls the longest in the Southern Hemisphere, does the climbing.

Advanced

The club counts 30% of the field as advanced, back basins included, and describes the whole place as one big natural park. Shirtfront has its own nutcracker rope tow.

Bordeaux Basin

Named for the bottle of Bordeaux Blanc opened on Mt St Patrick in 1957, the year the club began.

Staying up there

Robinson Lodge sleeps up to 64 in bunks on generator power, $60 a bed, and you bring a sleeping bag. The heated Day Lodge has a log burner and a deck with a barbecue, and the tows run until you want to stop.

Jollies Pass to the Acheron

Hanmer road, forest and pool tips

These cover the ski road, forest closures, the Acheron's hours and getting a table on Amuri Avenue.

  1. Google Maps sends people to the ski field over Jollies Pass, a poorly kept road that needs a 4WD. Go via Jacks Pass and Clarence Valley Road, as the club tells you to.
  2. For a table at Monteith's or Fire & Ice, walk in and put your name on the waiting list.
  3. Outside food is allowed in the pools complex, so lunch can come over from Foodway across the road.
  4. The Cascade Pools closed for refurbishment on 27 October 2026 and are due back for summer. The rest of the complex is open.
  5. Ride the St James Cycle Trail from Maling Pass down to the Homestead. There's more downhill that way and the prevailing wind sits behind you.
  6. Wasps are bad in Hanmer Forest from January to March, and DOC suggests carrying antihistamine. Molesworth gets them in late summer and autumn.
  7. A red flag outside the information center and the community hall means every forest track is shut for fire danger.
  8. The Heritage Forest is closed for maintenance, but the Forest Amble sculpture walk has reopened.
  9. Give the Acheron Road six hours to Blenheim. It only opens 7am to 7pm, and dogs and caravans aren't allowed.
