How do you get the best price on Hotham ski hire?

Book online with Hoys or Tirol if you can. Both take 30% off online against 20% at the counter, so a 2026 Sport package was $85 or $86 instead of $97 or $98. Driving up from Bright, Hoys in Harrietville hires skis and chains in one stop and fits its chains for free, and lodge guests can have Snow Monkey deliver gear to the door.

Where to hire

Hire on the ridge or down in Harrietville?

Drivers coming through Bright do best hiring in Harrietville, where skis and the chains you need for the climb come from one counter. If you're sleeping on the mountain, hire on the ridge and leave the gear out of the car.

  • Three prices. Hoys and Tirol charge Epic Pass holders least, then take 30% off online and 20% off at the counter. At Hoys in peak 2026 a Sport package was $72, $86 or $98, and the online rate needs booking 3 days ahead.
  • Swaps. Hire at one Hoys shop and swap or return it at another. Changing skis for a board there costs $15.
  • Gear the afternoon before. Hotham Sports hands over 1- and 2-day hires from 3pm the day before, or 2pm for longer, and gives you until 10am after the last hire day to return it.
  • Delivery and discounts. Snow Monkey brings gear to your door free, takes 35% off for families and 20% off for lodge guests, and hires free to anyone over 70.
  • Kids. Hoys, Tirol and Hotham Sports all include a kids' helmet. At Hoys an under-18 paid $54 online in the 2026 value season.
  • Goggles and gloves. Pack your own. The mountain shops don't rent them.

Dinner Plain, the village with no entry fee

Dinner Plain sits on the Omeo side about 11 km past Hotham. It opened in 1986 on freehold land, built only in timber, local stone and corrugated iron, and you can stay there without paying Hotham's daily fee.

  • The bus up. An hourly bus runs through the snow season for $23 an adult and $12 a child, with Hotham entry included in the fare. The ride back down is free, and it stops at Whisky Flat on request.
  • First turns. The Cobungra Platter is a wide 150 m green run served by a poma, with Hotham's own beginner lessons. Regulars describe Dinner Plain as one small slope and one lift.
  • Tobogganing. The Peashooter slope is 75 m long and 40 m wide. Entry is $10 a person, under-3s go free, and toboggans are hired separately from Cafe Play at Scrubbers End or the two ski shops.
  • Cross-country. Dinner Plain has 35 km of its own trails, groomed June to September, and the Brabralung Trail runs 10 km one way to Hotham.
  • Dogs. Dogs can walk the village trails on a leash. At Hotham they can only pass through in the car.
  • Supplies. The Dinner Plain Grocer on Big Muster Drive opens 9am to 6pm through the snow season, King's Birthday weekend until the end of September. Dinner Plain has no fuel either, so fill the tank in Bright or Omeo.

Mt Hotham Airport, for charter and private flights, is near Dinner Plain, about 20 km from the resort.

Getting to Mt Hotham

The Great Alpine Road crosses the top of the resort and stays open from both directions all year. From Melbourne, allow about 4.25 hours (380 km) through Bright and Harrietville, or 5.5 hours (460 km) around through Omeo.

Hoys chain fitting on the climb

On days chains are required, a Hoys crew works the roadside bays between Harrietville and Hotham, until midnight on Fridays. Chains hired from Hoys are fitted and taken off free; fitting your own costs $25 and removal $15.

Resort entry

A car paid $69 a day in 2026 for any stop inside the resort, even a toilet break or a photo, with parking and the village bus included. Driving straight through costs nothing if you leave by the other side, and bus and taxi fares already cover it. Entry permits →

Snow chains

Carry diamond-pattern chains through the declared winter period, winter tires or not. Ladder chains, spider chains and snow socks are banned, and nobody hires chains on the mountain, so pick them up in Myrtleford, Harrietville or Omeo. Chain rules →

Which side to climb

In a 2WD the Omeo side through Dinner Plain is less steep and more sheltered. The Harrietville road is narrow and exposed, and it's usually the first to close in a storm.

Coaches

HothamBus runs daily from Melbourne, Bright and Harrietville, and its Hotham Hopper meets Sydney flights at Albury. Day trips from Bright or Harrietville start at $69. HothamBus →

Parking

Day parking (blue signs) runs 7am to 11pm and is cleared overnight for the snowplows. The Corral car park fills first, and the Alpine Gateway car park at Loch drops straight into Heavenly Valley, so leave it to experienced skiers.

Village bus

Free with entry, every 15 minutes from 7am to 12:30am in the season. It doesn't loop to the Alpine Gateway, which has a shuttle from Hotham Central at 8:30am, 1pm and 4pm.

Fuel and charging

Hotham and Dinner Plain sell no fuel and the resort has no EV chargers. Fill up in Bright, Myrtleford or Omeo, which also sell alpine diesel for diesel cars.

Flying

Mt Hotham Airport takes charter and private flights only, about 30 minutes from Albury or Canberra and 50 from Sydney. Each passenger pays $22 on arrival and again on departure.

Runs, parks and an upside-down village

The village sits on the ridge at about 1,750 m, just below the 1,861 m summit, so you click in at the door and ski down to a lift. Hotham covers 320 hectares and shares the Epic Australia Pass with Falls Creek and Perisher.

Beginners

Start on the Summit Trainer and Summit Quad. Adult group lessons meet between the Summit Trainer and The Bird, and the 3-day Beginner Bundle for adults was $599. Regulars send first-timers who want long gentle greens to Falls Creek.

Intermediates

The Village Chair opens up some of the favorite intermediate runs, Road Runner serves the Sun Run, and Orchard has easy groomers. Gotcha gives intermediate and expert riders more room.

Advanced

Heavenly Valley holds the resort's steepest runs, and the Extreme Zone and Mary's Slide, one of the hardest runs in the country, fall away below the road.

Parks and night skiing

The Big D progression park has a jump line and rails, and Summit Terrain Park sits skier's right of the Summit chair. In 2026 the Big D ran night skiing on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 5 to 8pm, free for Epic Pass holders.

Cross-country

More than 35 km of trail across Hotham and Dinner Plain, most of it starting at Wire Plain and free with resort entry. Hotham also has Australia's only biathlon range.

Local tips

What Hotham regulars tell first-timers

Mostly about the climb from Harrietville, the entry fee and where the good snow is.

  1. Police and the checkpoints at Harrietville and Mother Johnson's check for chains in the season, even on a dry day. Hire them before the climb.
  2. Sleep in Dinner Plain and take the bus up. You skip the daily car fee, and the bus fare covers your Hotham entry.
  3. The best terrain sits below the village, so the day ends with a trek back up and out of the Heavenly Valley side.
  4. Heavenly Valley is the chair regulars rate highest, but it's a slow fixed-grip lift with weekend queues and the snow is chopped up by lunch. Go first thing.
  5. Non-skiers can't ride the chairs, as there are no scenic rides. For snow play, use the Hotham Hub toboggan park at Wire Plain, the $10 Peashooter in Dinner Plain, or the free snow at Mt Buffalo.
  6. Leave the dog in Dinner Plain. Pets are banned at Hotham except passing through in the car.
  7. Hoys runs a secure park-and-ride lot in Harrietville from $20 for a night, with coaches and taxis leaving from its lounge. The public Alps Link bus from Bright runs on set days, not daily.
